Lugazi, Uganda – May 14, 2025The Diocese of Lugazi is honored to lead the Uganda Martyrs Day celebrations at Namugongo on June 3, 2025. Under the theme “LORD, LET ME SEE AGAIN” (Mark 10:51), the diocese is diligently preparing to welcome millions of pilgrims from Uganda and beyond to commemorate the 22 Catholic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for their faith

Bishop Christopher Kakooza, the Ordinary of Lugazi Diocese, has emphasized the significance of this spiritual journey. Our preparations are not just logistical but deeply spiritual. We aim to provide a meaningful experience that honors the legacy of the martyrs,” he stated.

The diocese has initiated several activities to ensure a successful event:

  • Pilgrimage Initiatives: In November 2024, hundreds of faithful participated in a pilgrimage to Bulimu, the birthplace of St. Ponsiano Ngondwe, one of the Uganda Martyrs. This event marked the beginning of the journey towards the 2025 celebrations.

  • Choir Preparations: A 500-member choir is being assembled to lead the liturgical celebrations. Selections are ongoing to ensure a harmonious and spiritually uplifting musical experience.

  • Community Engagement: The diocese has distributed receipt books across its 33 parishes to facilitate fundraising efforts. These funds will support various aspects of the celebration, including logistics, security, and hospitality.

State Minister Diana Mutasingwa commended the diocese’s efforts during her visit, acknowledging the Church’s role in shaping communities and fostering unity. We extend our heartfelt appreciation to our bishops and the entire diocese for their leadership and dedication,” she expressed.

The Uganda Martyrs Day is a significant event that attracts pilgrims from across the globe. The Lugazi Diocese is committed to ensuring that the 2025 celebrations are conducted with the utmost reverence, safety, and spiritual depth.
